iOS 26.5 Release Date: The Game-Changing iPhone Feature You've Been Waiting For

The next major iPhone software update -- unless there's a small bug-squishing release or Background Security Improvements update in the meantime -- will be iOS 26.5. Here's when it's expected to arrive, along with one key feature that can't come soon enough. And while that isn't the all-new Siri that's eagerly anticipated, it's a key update nonetheless. More on that below. Apple iOS 26.5 Release Date Latest Prediction Earlier in the iOS 26 cycle, there were some anomalies. Some updates came later than expected and the removal of the iOS 18 signing window for recent phones happened sooner than predicted. That said, Apple has just made the most recent version, iOS 18.7.7 available to millions more users: full details of that here. But things seem to have settled down. Part of the reason for the changes seems to have been the new AI Siri, which now looks like it won't come until iOS 27. More on that in a moment. That means that Apple may have been able to accelerate development so everything matches the schedule of previous years. Those years saw the .5 release in May, usually on the second or third Monday. Since Apple seems to be sticking to its regular releases, that suggests that iOS will appear on or around Monday, May 11. That's my best guess, though it's possible that later in that week, or even Monday, May 18, are also in the frame. iOS 26.5 New Features Based on the first developer and public betas, it looks like Apple has a series of new capabilities planned. These include a Suggested Places addition to Maps, some changes for EU users such as third-party accessories using Live Activities. The Game-Changer: Secure Messaging For RCS But one feature in the first betas stands out: end-to-end encryption for Messages coming from, and going to, Android phones using RCS messaging. This has been on the cards for some time now, and it could be held back again, but iOS 26.5 looks likely. You can read full details here, but it's a game-changer as suddenly messages from Android phones will be as secure as ones from iPhones. The Missing Major Update: No New Siri Although it had been predicted to land in iOS 26.4, the all-new Apple Intelligence-revamped Siri still hasn't appeared. Although there is an outside chance it could land in a later beta of iOS 26.5, I'm sure it won't. After all, it's just two months until WWDC where Apple will announce the key upgrades coming this fall and since the company has only committed to the new Siri some time in 2026, it seems to make a lot more sense to hold it until iOS 27 so it can have a big fanfare in June ahead of a fall release. When it comes, it's likely to be an even bigger game-changer. For now, though, the prospect of secure messaging is appealing.
