The Zondacrypto withdrawal crisis left millions of dollars of customer funds frozen at Poland's largest crypto exchange . The company provided a wallet containing 4,500 BTC to demonstrate its solvency, but no one at Zondacrypto had control over the coins.
This private key belonged to founder Sylwester Suszek , who sold the exchange in 2021 and has been missing since March 2022. Currently, regulators, prosecutors, and even the Polish Prime Minister are closely monitoring the company.
The withdrawal crisis begins at zondacrypto.
The issue of delayed withdrawals first appeared in December 2025. Users reported on the exchange's official Telegram channel that their funds were stuck in a pending state for days. The management then explained this was due to a high volume of users and a new security protocol update.
By the end of March 2026, the number of complaints had skyrocketed. A website, whistleblower zonda-alert.pl, was created to gather customer feedback. Simultaneously, blockchain analysts began publishing validation data.
The amount of Bitcoin (BTC) held monthly in Zondacrypto's community-known hot wallets plummeted from 55.7 BTC to just 0.086 BTC between August 2024 and April 2026, a drop of 99.7%.
Zondacrypto previously handled a large volume of crypto transactions from retail investors in Poland. The prolonged freeze directly affected hundreds of thousands of customers at once.
The private key has disappeared and the founder's whereabouts are unknown.
CEO Przemysław Kral addressed the allegations on April 17th. He mentioned a wallet containing approximately 4,500 BTC , worth around $330 million. According to Kral, this is proof that the exchange still has sufficient funds to pay its customers.
However, this argument quickly crumbled when Kral himself admitted that zondacrypto could not access these coins. The private wallet keys were held solely by Suszek, and he did not hand them over when the exchange was sold in 2021.
The latest post by the CEO of zondacrypto on XSince March 2022, Suszek has not appeared in public and has been unreachable. Polish newspapers and private investigators have searched across Europe but have yet to locate him.
Another investigation is now also targeting Suszek himself. Even his family cannot verify that Suszek is still alive. In reality, a wallet that is not checked by anyone is as empty as a wallet to the customer.
Independent analysts at Recoveris tracked 511 transactions transferring funds from zondacrypto's wallet to a Kraken deposit address. The total amount transferred from December 2025 to April 2026 exceeded $21 million.
Kral denies these allegations and threatens legal action. The lack of transparency surrounding these transactions further erodes customer trust.
National political crisis
The incident has been constantly featured on the biggest news channels in Poland in recent days. Television, radio, and major newspapers have all been reporting on the latest developments.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk increased the pressure on April 18th when he told parliament that zondacrypto had funded politicians to vote against regulations governing the crypto market. Tusk also claimed the exchange had links to Russia.
The largest parties in the Polish Parliament began using the zondacrypto scandal to attack or defend their politicians. The name zondacrypto has now become a tool for political infighting from all sides.
Regulatory authorities intervene.
The Polish National Prosecutor's Office officially opened an investigation on April 8th. The Competition and Consumer Protection Authority announced that they had been collecting complaints related to zondacrypto since 2022.
This agency officially launched an investigation into ZondaCrypto's parent company in January 2025. Currently, the Polish internal security agency is also XEM the exchange's operations.
Many experts believe this situation is quite similar to the Cinkciarz.pl collapse in 2024 – where a technical issue was initially thought to be temporary but later led to the loss of licenses and significant losses for customers.
What will happen next?
The withdrawal crisis at zondacrypto reminded many of the FTX scenario: frozen funds, unclear statements, the CEO constantly reassuring about liquidation , while on-chain data told a different story.
Over a million customers, along with the future of crypto management under Poland's MiCA regulation, now depend on the outcome of the upcoming investigation. In the coming weeks, authorities will have to unravel the mystery of the wallet, the missing founder, and address the political repercussions. Customers are finding it difficult to be patient any longer. The person holding the wallet keys remains unaccounted for.
