The exchange between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and U.S. officials led the government to issue an order requiring Anthropic to disable the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models.
This comes after researchers within the company reported that Fable 5 had been exploited to provide information about restricted cyberattacks.
What were the reasons behind Anthropic's decision to discontinue Fable 5 and Mythos 5?
Amazon is one of Anthropic's largest investors, with Capital totaling billions of dollars. The company's report indicates that Fable 5 discovered security vulnerabilities in at least four software programs when receiving certain queries.
Mr. Jassy raised security concerns with senior officials in the Trump administration. According to the Wall Street Journal , the White House immediately held an emergency meeting to plan a response.
Meanwhile, cybersecurity researchers began scrutinizing Amazon's findings. Government officials instructed Anthropic to address the vulnerabilities or temporarily deactivate the models, according to government sources.
Ultimately, the chosen solution was to ban foreign governments , companies, and individuals from accessing the tool, as this was XEM the safest approach. President Trump agreed to this decision, although he was concerned that the policy could slow technological innovation, according to a senior White House Chia .
“Jassy’s calls to government officials were widely XEM as a general warning, but they subsequently led to a broad ban from the Commerce Department, preventing foreign users from accessing Mythos and Fable,” the report states. “National Cybersecurity Director Sean Cairncross and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick were also involved in these exchanges. The Commerce Department is responsible for controlling the export of critical technologies.”

Anthropic responds to cybersecurity risks.
Anthropic argues that these reported vulnerabilities are simple issues and that adversary models can detect them without bypassing security measures.
“We disagree that a commercially deployed model used by hundreds of millions of people should be immediately withdrawn simply because a limited jailbreaking capability has been discovered. If this standard were applied to the entire industry, we believe it could prevent all new model providers from developing and launching new products,” the Anthropic team Chia .
Anthropic has apologized to customers for the disruption. The company stated that the temporary suspension may have been due to a misunderstanding and is working to restore user access as soon as possible.
At this point, the discontinuation of the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models comes just as Anthropic is preparing for a secret IPO . A prolonged disruption could cause users to switch to a competitor's product while Anthropic seeks to lift the ban.
