Recently @CelestiaOrg has launched Blobstream for the Ethereum ecosystem, which takes the form of a light client to help Ethereum developers easily build layer 2. Obviously, it is trying to further weaken the dependence of layer2 developers on Ethereum DA in order to increase the weight of its own modular DA in the Ethereum ecosystem.
I personally do not deny the prospects of modular DA, but it is not a good thing to rush into the Ethereum layer2 camp.
The mainstream layer 2 uses the "calldate" form to rely on Ethereum as the DA layer, which is the result of weighing security and consensus. If DA is separated from Ethereum, the consensus of layer 2 will not be protected by the Ethereum main network.
Because, if Ethereum does not participate in DA, the Ethereum main network will only become the asset settlement layer of layer 2. If there is premeditated evil in the layer 2 consensus layer, even if it is a "bad debt", the mainnet must "legally" carry out settlement. In this way, instead of being an extension of the expansion of Ethereum, layer2 has become a disruptor that penetrates and disrupts Ethereum. Although the probability of this is low, hidden dangers in this regard cannot be ruled out in the long run. To a certain extent, although Ethereum's DA capability is weak, waiting for the Cancun upgrade and always embracing Ethereum DA will be an absolutely orthodox choice for Ethereum layer 2.
At present, we have only seen that L2beat has removed a batch of non-Ethereum DA layer2. If the trend of this DA breaking away from Ethereum becomes more and more intense, it is not ruled out that Vitalik will jump out and publicly intervene in the future.
If some chains themselves are layer 2, it is just a transition. The ultimate goal is to be an independent chain. Then Ethereum will be the settlement layer, Celestia will be the DA layer, and all primitive components can be modularly encapsulated. Ethereum's DA will also be natural. It doesn't matter anymore.
