Fun fact. It may seem like a harmless grooming habit, but removing nose hairs by plucking can carry a surprisingly serious risk. The inside of your nose lies within the “danger triangle of the face” — a region with a dense network of veins that connect directly to the brain. When you pluck a nose hair, you create a tiny wound in the follicle that can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream. Because the veins in this area have no valves (unlike most other veins in the body), bacteria can travel quickly toward the brain. In rare cases, this can lead to severe infections such as cavernous sinus thrombosis — a dangerous blood clot that may cause neurological damage or even life-threatening complications. To stay safe while keeping your nose groomed, dermatologists strongly recommend using electric trimmers or blunt-tipped safety scissors instead of plucking.

A landmark clinical study demonstrated an impressive 87% success rate in reversing hair loss from patchy alopecia areata using a simple, natural treatment: crude onion juice. Published in the Journal of Dermatology, the research showed that applying fresh onion juice topically twice a day resulted in significant hair regrowth for 86.9% of participants within 6–8 weeks. The effect was especially pronounced in men, who achieved a 93.7% regrowth rate, compared to 71.4% in women. In contrast, the control group—treated only with tap water—showed virtually no improvement, highlighting the potential of this inexpensive, home-based remedy as a viable alternative for those avoiding conventional medications. Researchers attribute the success to onion juice's sulfur-rich compounds, which act as a mild topical irritant. This irritation is thought to provoke a localized immune response that redirects the autoimmune attack characteristic of alopecia areata away from the hair follicles, allowing them to re-enter the anagen (growth) phase. Despite the encouraging findings, the study had limitations: a relatively small number of participants (around 38 across both groups) and no double-blinding, which raises the possibility of observer or placebo bias. While promising, onion juice isn't without drawbacks—its strong odor can be off-putting for regular use, and the high sulfur content may cause scalp irritation, redness, or itching in some people. Overall, the results position crude onion juice as an intriguing, low-cost option for managing mild to moderate patchy alopecia areata, though larger, more rigorously controlled trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for broader use.
