This is a bad take. If trade negotiations were logical and data driven, we wouldn’t be in the situation we’re currently in. For the past 10 years, the Liberal government has failed to build or maintain meaningful relationships with the Republican Party, much less the MAGA wing. They did this out of “principle”. Now, we’re in a position where no senior members of our government have any meaningful longstanding relationships with senior members in the White House, or with Republicans in the House and Senate. @jamiljivani going down is a first step in helping build some of these critically important relationships. We should count our blessings to have a MP with a direct line to VP Vance, and who could put his country ahead of his party and build real connections to people who could be at the centre of government in the U.S. for the next decade. We should be upset by how we’ve been treated by the Trump administration. But we shouldn’t let that blind us to the practical reality that America has been, and will always be our closest neighbour, ally and trading partner. The best day to plant an oak tree was 50 years ago. The next best day is today.

Mr. Jivani went to Yale; I did not. One point in his favour. I've been a trade lawyer, litigator, diplomat, academic, and negotiator; he has no discernible experience or qualifications in trade negotiations. One for me. With that out of the way, this is nuts. Here's why. 1/ x.com/jamiljivani/st…
