According to a Reuters survey, most surveyed economists believe the Federal Reserve will cut rates by 25 basis points at each of the three remaining policy meetings in 2024, and only nine out of 101 economists expect the Fed to cut rates by 50 basis points next week. Santander's chief U.S. economist Stephen Stanley said, "The employment report, although weak, is not disastrous. Last Friday, Williams and Waller did not provide clear guidance on whether to cut rates by 25 or 50 basis points on September 18, but they both gave a relatively benign assessment of the economy, which in my view strongly points to a 25 basis point cut." 65 out of 95 surveyed economists believe the Fed will cut rates twice more in November and December, by 25 basis points each time, after next week's meeting. Last month, 55 out of 101 surveyed economists held this view.
