The Flappy Bird Foundation has announced that the popular game “Flappy Bird” will soon be making a comeback. However, the original developer of the game, Dong Nguyen, has confirmed that he will not be involved in the project. He posted on the X platform for the first time since 2017, stating that he has no involvement with the project and does not support cryptocurrency. He clarified: “I do not sell anything, and I do not support cryptocurrency.”
The Flappy Bird Foundation’s announcement said it had “acquired the rights from Gametech Holdings, LLC,” the company that acquired the Flappy Bird trademark from Nguyen. However, this was not the result of a direct transaction between Nguyen and the foundation. User X discovered that Gametech Holdings filed an opposition to Nguyen’s Flappy Bird trademark in 2023. The United States Patent and Trademark Office confirmed that the trademark had been abandoned and Nguyen’s ownership had ended in January of this year.
The Flappy Bird Foundation did not mention Nguyen’s involvement in their announcement, but they did try to appeal to players’ nostalgia when promoting the game. In a blog post on September 12, researcher Varun Biniwale found a Flappy Bird Foundation website (now taken down) that revealed that the game would “fly higher than ever on Solana, as it enters Web 3.0.” The website also emphasized that it would be a “Web 3” game with a “play-to-earn” feature that would allow players to earn money, as well as elements like “Stake to own” and free Airdrop .
