The digital identity project Worldcoin (WLD) backed by Sam Altman has just announced a rebrand to World Network — shortened to World.
Along with the name change, the project also announced the official launch of World Chain on the Primary Network. World Chain is a Layer 2 blockchain network secured by Ethereum, directly integrated with the project. The supporting partners for the blockchain launch include Optimism, Alchemy, Uniswap, Safe, Dune, and Etherscan.
"With the rapid growth of the project and the importance of the World ID proof-of-personhood protocol, the 'Worldcoin' name is no longer sufficient to represent the project's mission to empower people," according to the announcement from World sent to The Block.
"With the three core pillars (World Chain, World ID, and Worldcoin), World is truly a network of verified, real people, aiming to build a positive future where humanity remains at the center of AI progress."
Worldcoin, launched in July 2023, provides a digital identity solution called World ID, which helps verify the identity and "humanity" of users online and on the blockchain. Those who provide their biometric data (such as an iris scan through a metallic orb device) to prove they are a real person will receive a "digital passport" and the cryptocurrency WLD. The World Network claims to have over 10 million registered users across 160 countries.
