ToggleWhat is DeSci? Why is it booming?
Recently, due to Binance Labs' announcement of investing in the BIO Protocol, and the offline event in which Binance founder CZ and Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin jointly participated in the project, "Decentralized Science (DeSci)" has begun to attract market attention.
DeSci (Decentralized Science) is an innovative concept that combines blockchain technology and scientific research, aiming to reshape the current ways of funding, collaborating, data sharing, and results publishing in scientific research. The goal of DeSci is to create a more open, transparent, fair, and efficient scientific ecosystem. Due to the rising market heat, tokens related to DeSci, such as VITA and RSC, have seen quite amazing price increases in the past week.
Desci combines Meme to attract hot money
In addition, the meme coin issuance platform Pump.Science launched by the Desci platform Molecule DAO has also been revived. The platform aims to use the hype of meme coins to support medical experiments. The meme coins from this platform, RIF and URO, representing the compounds rifampicin (RIF) and uric acid (URO), have both increased by 20 times in less than two days.
It can be said that Desci has become another concept sector that has stirred up a sensation in the cryptocurrency market after AI.
The gap between DeSci ideals and reality
However, not everyone is optimistic about this concept. Berachain co-founder Smokey posted on X that as someone who has helped bring multiple drugs into the clinic, he believes that most of the content of DeSci is misleading, and the worst-case scenario could be a scam. Smokey added:
"The current gap between the reality and imagination of DeSci is problematic and will lead to further issues. Most of the promotion sounds like we can cure cancer by just throwing something on the chain, but that is wrong."
At the same time, Smokey also stated that the large amount of capital in the DeSci track could be better allocated, implying that there are many projects in the current track that are not worth their current market value.
