The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is reaffirming its strong belief in the potential of Blockchain technology by scaling up the Global Blockchain Academy.
This academy not only trains 24,000 staff from UNDP, UN Volunteers, and UNCDF, but also represents a major step in integrating Blockchain into sustainable development strategies. Through a partnership with the Algorand Foundation, a leading Blockchain organization, UNDP aims to equip its staff with in-depth knowledge on how Blockchain can enhance the efficiency and transparency of development programs.
Blockchain – A tool for building trust and sustainable development
According to UNDP, Blockchain is not only an emerging technology, but also a tool to enhance transparency, efficiency, and reliability in sustainable development projects. Burcu Mavis, Head of the Blockchain Academy at UNDP, emphasizes:
"Blockchain is not just a technological solution, but a platform to build trust in development programs. The Blockchain Academy will help our staff understand how to apply this technology to deliver more transparent and comprehensive development solutions."
UNDP has been experimenting with and applying Blockchain since 2015 in areas such as:
- Supply chain traceability: Helping to increase transparency in global supply chains, reduce child labor risks, and promote sustainable sourcing.
- Democratizing energy transactions: Creating fair and efficient energy exchange models.
- Financial inclusion: Providing financial solutions for underserved communities.
Blockchain Academy – A turning point in Blockchain education and application
The Blockchain Academy, launched in 2023 and now being scaled up, not only provides over 18 hours of in-depth training but also builds a dynamic community of practice, enabling the sharing of experiences and fostering collaboration across the entire UN system.
