The classic massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) "Ragnarok Online", which brought countless players unforgettable memories during the MMORPG boom in the 2000s and has over 100 million fans globally, has announced that it will launch a new Web3 version on the Ethereum sidechain Ronin.
Ronin announced on the 19th that the Web3 blockchain version of Ragnarok Online, "Ragnarok Landverse", will officially launch on Ronin in the first quarter of 2025, and a new version "Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis" (Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis) will be released.
"Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis" is now open for pre-registration, giving players a chance to receive mysterious rewards before the game's launch.
Ragnarok Landverse: The Web3 Version of Ragnarok Online
Ragnarok Landverse is a Web3 "Play-to-Earn" PC online game developed by Maxion, the flagship game studio of the metagame ecosystem developer Zentry, in collaboration with Gravity, the publisher of Ragnarok Online, and launched on the BNB Chain in September 2023. It is based on the classic IP and gameplay of Ragnarok Online, and incorporates blockchain technologies such as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and token economics. It is the second Web3 game attempt by Ragnarok Online, following the NFT mobile game "Ragnarok Labyrinth NFT".
In this game, you can complete quests, battle monsters, engage in empire wars between guilds, mine resources, obtain NFT items and land, and upgrade your character. The game also has a complex on-chain economy, where players can extract resources like pure gold fragments or earn tokens as rewards. Outside the game, players can exchange the game token ION for USDC stablecoin 1:1 on the Maxion marketplace, and use ION to purchase NFT items or exchange for Moonlight Stones, which can then be used to mint items into NFTs for trading on the market.
However, the game has not opened servers in Chinese and Korean regions, so the discussion around it is not as high in these two areas. But the game is particularly popular in Southeast Asia, and the choice to launch the new Landverse server on Ronin is also aimed at the large player community in the Ronin ecosystem in Southeast Asia.
Ragnarok Online Deepens Its Web3 Presence
Ronin pointed out in the announcement that "Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis" will not be a continuation of Ragnarok Landverse, but will provide players with a completely new and enhanced experience.
The Landverse servers will also be migrated to Ronin at a later stage. Currently, any existing Landverse assets cannot be used in the Genesis experience on Ronin. You can think of it as a fresh, enhanced start.
Ronin had earlier this year launched the third Web3 blockchain game of Ragnarok Online, "Ragnarok: Monster World".
Ronin stated that "Ragnarok Landverse" generated over $15 million in revenue from in-game item and NFT sales in 2024. With the upcoming launch of "Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis" on Ronin, it is expected to bring more Ragnarok Online fans into the Web3 world and further boost the Ronin gaming ecosystem.
