The X account of Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu has been hacked and used to advertise a fake token, the latest incident in a series of similar recent hacks.
Blockchain gaming conglomerate Animoca Brands has confirmed that X account of co-founder and chairman Yat Siu has been hacked to promote a fake Token, in a series of recent attacks targeting cryptocurrency-related accounts on platform X.
"Unfortunately, Yat Siu's social media account has been compromised," Animoca wrote on X on December 26. "The token launch on Solana as announced in a post was carried out by the hackers."
In the now-deleted post, Siu's account had shared a link to a token launch on the Solana-based memecoin platform Pump.fun, named Animoca Brands (MOCA) — after the company and its associated NFT collection, Mocaverse.
Blockchain investigator ZachXBT wrote on X that Siu "may have been phished" by a scam email from the attackers behind the recent series of hacks and fake token posts, which have netted over $500,000 in the past month alone.
ZachXBT said the fake MOCA Token "was deployed by the same address" that has been pushing similar fake tokens shared on other recently hacked X accounts.
The fake MOCA Token briefly peaked at over $36,700 after being shared on Siu's account but lost nearly all its value within seconds, dropping to a market capitalization of around $7,700, according to data from Birdeye.
Currently, the Token's value is only around $6,200 and its trading volume has all but disappeared.
ZachXBT previously explained that the attackers had taken control of at least 15 X accounts through social engineering — impersonating the X team to send fake copyright violation notices.
These notices created a sense of urgency and tricked victims into accessing a phishing site, where they unwittingly reset their X account passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA) credentials, which were then sent to the attackers.
The first known incident occurred on November 26, involving the X account of Bitcoin infrastructure provider RuneMine, and the most recent - prior to the suspected attack on Siu - happened with the account of cryptocurrency trading video platform Kick on December 24.
