World Network, a Blockchain-based human identity verification project previously known as Worldcoin, has just announced a significant milestone by surpassing 10 million users globally.
Launched in 2023 with the sponsorship of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, World utilizes iris scanning technology through small spherical devices to verify that users are indeed human. Participants who undergo the iris scan and registration process will receive WLD Tokens. The project's philosophy emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between humans and AI agents in a society increasingly reliant on artificial intelligence.
"With the advancement of AI, the need for verifying human identity in the online environment has become more crucial than ever," World shared in a recent blog post.
In addition to the 10 million verified users, the World App - the official application of the project - has also recorded over 20 million downloads, marking a significant step in its global expansion.
Another notable achievement of World in 2024 was its successful launch in Brazil, a country with over 215 million people and a positive attitude towards cryptocurrencies.
However, the project has not been without controversy, particularly regarding data privacy. Last month, the Bavarian Data Protection Supervisory Authority (Germany) requested that World delete the biometric data collected through the iris scanning process. In response, World has stated that they have updated their operational processes and emphasized that the authority's findings "primarily" related to old technologies and procedures that were replaced in 2024.
Throughout the past year, World has continuously collaborated with regulatory bodies worldwide to ensure compliance with legal requirements, paving the way for expansion into new countries. Currently, the project is present in over 160 countries, affirming its global influence.
