DOGS, a memecoin built on The Open Network (TON), has announced a roadmap for the first half of 2025, outlining plans for DOGS-themed games, community engagement through local charity work, and expanding payment use cases for the DOGS token.
According to the roadmap, users will have the option to use their DOGS tokens, inspired by the founder of Telegram Pavel Durov's dog drawing, to make online and offline purchases, such as gift cards and travel bookings, by the end of this year.
Individuals can also register local chapters of non-profit organizations to facilitate charity work funded through a $4.5 million community charity fund consisting of 6 billion unclaimed DOGS tokens.
The DOGS community recently shared that one of their charity partners includes Best Friends Animal Society, which cares for homeless animals in the United States.
This community outreach effort emphasizes the use case of a memecoin, a type of cryptocurrency that analysts often criticize as lacking utility, value, and real-world purpose.
DOGS breaks records, causing TON to halt operations
In September, the TON community announced that the DOGS token was held by a record-breaking 4.5 million unique holders, making it the memecoin with the most holders to date.
At the time, the TON community noted that "53 million users had interacted with the DOGS Mini App and 42.2 million were eligible for the token Airdrop", making this the largest memecoin creation event in history.
The rapid popularity of the DOGS Telegram Mini App and the influx of users rushing to mine DOGS tokens caused TON to halt block production twice.
On August 28, 2024, TON experienced its first outage related to DOGS, halting block production for several hours due to an unusual network congestion from users on the chain claiming DOGS tokens during the Airdrop.
The second outage occurred the following day, on August 29, and lasted around six hours before block production resumed.
TON was halted for a total of 12 hours within a 36-hour period due to the overwhelming number of users claiming the memecoin.
