The Ethereum community has recently been increasingly dissatisfied with Ethereum's market performance and the Ethereum Foundation's fund management. Bitcoin and Solana have both set new historical highs, while Ethereum has yet to return to its 2021 historical high of $4,891. At the same time, the Ethereum Foundation has been continuously selling ETH, but has failed to effectively promote ecological innovation, disappointing many.
Vitalik Buterin Restructures Ethereum Foundation Leadership
To rescue Ethereum's decline, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced on the 18th that he is undertaking a major reform of the Ethereum Foundation's leadership structure, which has been ongoing for nearly a year. Some of the reforms have been implemented and announced, while others are still in progress, with the main goals being:
- Improve the technical expertise of the Ethereum Foundation's leadership
- Improve two-way communication and connection between the Ethereum Foundation's leadership and new and old participants in the ecosystem. The Ethereum Foundation's responsibility is to support users (individuals and institutions), application developers, wallets, and L2
- Introduce new talent to improve execution capability and speed
- Provide more active support for application developers, ensuring that important values and inalienable rights (especially privacy, open source, and resistance to censorship) are implemented in the user environment, including the application layer
- Continue to increase the use of decentralization and privacy technologies, as well as Ethereum, including for payments and financial management
Vitalik Buterin also stated that the Ethereum Foundation will avoid the following in the future:
- Implementing any kind of ideological/atmospheric shift
- Actively lobbying regulatory authorities and powerful politicians (especially in the US, but actually anywhere, especially in major countries), at the risk of damaging Ethereum's position as a global neutral platform
- Becoming an arena for vested interests
- Becoming a highly centralized organization, even becoming the "protagonist" of Ethereum
Vitalik Buterin emphasized that the Ethereum Foundation will not do any of these things, and this will not change. If anyone seeks a different vision, they are welcome to establish their own organization.
Aave Calls for the Ethereum Foundation to be Streamlined and Efficient
Overall, Vitalik Buterin outlined the goals of improving communication and better supporting the Ethereum developer community, but emphasized that the Ethereum Foundation's core mission will not change. After his announcement, the Ethereum community sparked widespread discussion.
When asked how the Ethereum Foundation should maintain neutrality while increasing Ethereum adoption, Vitalik Buterin believes that the Ethereum Foundation should use the tools of ecosystem building, including DeFi, even if this means the Ethereum Foundation may not be completely neutral in this regard.
Meanwhile, Aave co-founder Stani Kulechov suggested that the Ethereum Foundation should focus on accelerating innovation to make Ethereum as cheap as possible, without sacrificing security or making the system overly complex. As for the Ethereum Foundation as an organization, it should be a streamlined and efficient machine, and anyone who is not fully committed should leave the Ethereum Foundation:
