Celo – previously an independent Layer 1 blockchain – has officially completed the migration to the Ethereum Layer 2 network. This process took place on the mainnet today, marking the cessation of Celo L1 and the completion of integration into the Layer 2 architecture.
The proposal to transition from Layer 1 to Layer 2 was first proposed by the CLabs development team in July 2023. The goal was to enhance connectivity with the Ethereum ecosystem, leverage security advantages, the extensive developer network, and address scalability and interoperability limitations that Celo faced when operating independently.
Celo now operates as an Optimistic Rollup through Optimism's OP Stack. After the transition, the network is integrated with a direct bridge to Ethereum, simultaneously reducing block creation time from 5 seconds to just 1 second, significantly improving transaction performance.
