On April 22, according to the anti-tariff declaration website, many renowned economists, including two Nobel Prize winners in economics, jointly issued a statement opposing the large-scale unilateral tariff increases implemented by the Trump administration through executive orders since taking office in 2025.
The statement criticizes the policy as repeating the protectionist mistakes of the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Act, distorting markets, harming consumer interests, and violating the principles of free trade and constitutionalism. The statement calls for a return to the founding values of "peace, commerce, and honest friendship," and currently, this "anti-tariff declaration" has received support from over 1,368 academic and policy professionals.
