On April 30, the Karnataka High Court in India ordered the blocking of encrypted email service Proton Mail. The court, citing the Information Technology Act of 2008, demanded that the government "immediately block" domains related to Proton Mail. This action stems from a complaint filed by a New Delhi design company in January, alleging that its employees received offensive emails through the service.
Notably, in March 2024, Indian authorities had previously proposed blocking the service due to "false bomb threats," but the service continued to operate in India. Additionally, Proton AG (the Swiss parent company of the platform) had provided a user's information to Spanish authorities in 2024, raising concerns among privacy advocates about the data security of this centralized service.
Founded in Switzerland in 2014, Proton is known for services such as Proton Mail, Proton VPN, and Proton Drive, focusing on providing privacy-prioritized encrypted communication and storage solutions, with over 100 million user accounts.
