
PANews reported on May 20th that according to Cryptonews, South Korea and the European Union held a cybersecurity policy dialogue in Seoul, agreeing to strengthen cooperation in combating cryptocurrency theft by North Korean hacker groups. Yoon Jong-kwon, Director-General of International Security at the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Maciej Stadejek, Head of Security Policy at the EU External Action Service, co-chaired the meeting, focusing on cross-border intelligence sharing and financial infrastructure protection cooperation plans.
South Korean lawmaker Ha Tae-kyung revealed that after a 2019 UN report of North Korea stealing $2 billion in cryptocurrencies, South Korea has suffered an additional loss of $310 million. He accused the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) of having security vulnerabilities and suggested reorganizing it as a presidential direct-reporting institution. The EU and South Korea plan to coordinate positions within multilateral frameworks such as the UN and assist developing countries in enhancing their cybersecurity capabilities.
