For a long time, members of the crypto community, especially those who were involved in the early days when MetaMask was the only viable wallet to access Ethereum services, have been expecting an Airdrop from the company.
Many people have given up and moved on; some have even stopped using MetaMask due to the many issues they have encountered. Without any Airdrop commitments, it is difficult to find motivation to continue using the platform.
However, there is now a new ray of hope, as Joseph Lubin , founder of MetaMask's parent company, ConsenSys, has hinted at the possibility of launching a Token in the future for Web3 protocol of their own, and many hope that their wallet service will be among them.
Lubin's comments spark hope in the community
Sharplink Gaming (SBET), known as Strategy of ETH, saw a 75% drop overnight after several crypto news sites and KOLs Chia an SEC filing, claiming to have sold off 100% of their shares.
This sent investors into a panic and led to the stock dropping about 75% in after-hours trading. However, the reality is that these people did not actually sell their shares as the websites suggested, and Lubin was there to clarify the situation.
Lubin also chimed in on a comment chain from another user, analyzing how users could take advantage of this discount. At that point, one person asked Lubin to Tokenize SBET so it could be purchased on-chain.
In his response, Lubin expressed optimism and hinted at the potential of SBET and many other protocols to be Tokenize. Under that response, a user took the opportunity to ask about the possibility of MetaMask receiving an Airdrop.
“You’re probably tired of this question, but will there ever be a MetaMask Token ?” the user asked. “Not a Governance Token, not even a Meme token . I understand that ensuring fairness is difficult. Wallet longevity and consistency in usage would be a great indicator for an Airdrop.”
Lubin's response indicated that there is a “short- and medium-term plan/strategy” in the works, “including standardization of our current products and other initiatives.”
“Web3 protocols need Token,” he wrote, before adding that the “first protocol to launch” will be LINEA and all Token will “support each other.”
Lubin on the next protocol to get a Token after LINEA
After Lubin revealed that LINEA was the first protocol to receive a Token, some users began speculating about the next protocol to receive similar treatment. One user suggested that it would be Infura, but Lubin chimed in to say that the answer to that question was most likely the Decentralized Infrastructure Network (DIN).
“DIN could be next. But don't hold me to it,” he wrote.
Lubin describes DIN as an extension of Infura, seeing it as a beacon for a decentralized protocol ecosystem.
“Infura is working with a wide range of partners, from large service providers to niche service providers, to help them respond to DIN requests with acceptable and monitored performance, based on Infura’s standards,” Lubin wrote. “DIN is a critical service for MetaMask, helping it scale rapidly to cover the entire decentralized protocol ecosystem, because Infura provides the highest performance but only on a small number of protocols.”
Lubin believes DIN will be a game changer and empowering, as it could enable Web3 to own its own infrastructure in a big way.
“Imagine if Web1 and Web2 builders and users could own a Tokenize implementation of TCP/IP and HTTP. DIN would facilitate community ownership of this deep infrastructure,” Lubin Chia .
