The Ethereum Foundation has just created a new group called “Dai,” led by core developer Davide Crapis, with the goal of accelerating research at the intersection of blockchain and artificial intelligence.
According to Crapis, the group has two main missions:
- Making Ethereum the preferred infrastructure layer for payments and coordination in the AI economy.
- Building a decentralized AI stack, so that the future of AI does not depend on a few large companies.
In the short term, the group is focused on developing the ERC-8004 standard for AI agent identification and transactions, which is expected to be launched at the Devconnect conference in November. The standard aims to help applications verify who an AI agent is, what rules it follows, and whether it is trustworthy, while also standardizing how AI and robots pay, coordinate, and enforce policies without intermediaries.
This is especially important as automated software increasingly makes payments, signs messages, and calls on-chain services. A common standard would reduce Shard between wallets, agents, and dapps, and give developers a consistent way to prove the provenance and behavior of AI agents.
Crapis said the Dai team will work with both the Foundation’s Protocol and Ecosystem divisions, aligning protocol improvements with the needs of AI builders and funding public goods projects. He calls this an “Ethereum + AI” approach, with Ethereum acting as a neutral, transparent base layer for value, credibility, and rules, while AI provides incentives for greater use of Ethereum.
“Ethereum can be as useful to AI developers today as it is in the sci-fi future. Ethereum makes AI more trustworthy, and AI makes Ethereum more useful. As more intelligent agents transact, they need a neutral base layer for value and credibility,” Crapis emphasized .
In the long term, the Ethereum Foundation aims to build a decentralized, censorship-resistant AI infrastructure, in parallel with the roadmap for developing privacy (private read/write, proving) and interoperability between Layer 2 so that the ecosystem operates as a unified chain .
