On September 17, OpenAI announced the launch of "Stargate UK," collaborating with Nvidia and UK AI startup Nscale to strengthen the UK's sovereign AI computing power and infrastructure. This project will utilize Nvidia's Grace-Blackwell GPUs and support critical applications in the public sector, finance, research institutions, and national defense and security. Combined with AI education and talent training, it will help accelerate the adoption of AI technology in the UK, cultivate a new generation of workforce, further drive economic development, and enhance global competitiveness.
Signed an MoU with the UK, laying the groundwork for a British version of the Stargate program
In July of this year, OpenAI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UK government, establishing a collaborative direction to address the UK's AI infrastructure needs and promote the localization of AI technology. This agreement serves as the foundation for the UK's Stargate project and extends the global reach of OpenAI's OpenAI for Countries initiative .
OpenAI announces its project launch as Trump visits the UK
OpenAI announced the UK version of Project Stargate during Trump's visit to the UK. The project, in partnership with Nvidia and Nscale, will build a sovereign computing platform for the UK. Key features include:
Local computing power: ensuring OpenAI’s latest AI models can be run directly in the UK, supporting sectors involving highly regulated or national security-related collaborations, such as financial services and scientific research projects.
Economy and Competitiveness: Working alongside the UK’s National AI Opportunity Action Plan, we will help drive economic growth and strengthen our position in the global AI race.
Nvidia, Arm, and Nscale help infrastructure expansion
Nscale will expand its UK data center footprint, focusing on Cobalt Park in the northeast, a new AI growth area. The company plans to explore deploying up to 8,000 Grace-Blackwell GPUs by the first quarter of 2026, with the flexibility to expand to approximately 31,000 GPUs in the future.
Nvidia will provide Grace-Blackwell GPUs for the project, which include technology from British chip designer Arm, to strengthen cooperation between the UK and the US in the semiconductor field and ensure that the project can use the world's most advanced AI computing hardware.
OpenAI Academy launches in the UK, promoting AI education
OpenAI also announced that OpenAI Academy has landed in the UK, providing a universal AI learning platform to assist the government in increasing the number of AI skills training workers to 7.5 million by 2030.
Content Design: Collaborate with local business leaders to create flexible, customizable learning courses covering AI tools and practical applications.
The driving goal is to prevent regions from being marginalized due to technological gaps, while promoting employment opportunities and economic growth, and ensuring that all regions can keep up with the pace of AI development.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted:
"This initiative will accelerate scientific breakthroughs, boost productivity, and drive economic growth, realizing the vision of AI benefiting every person and every business."
