Job openings ticked up in August from an upwardly revised level in July.
But using a 3-month average, they edged down to the lowest level since the reopening, to 7.26 million.
The ratio of job vacancies to unemployed workers also ticked lower, to 0.979 from 0.996 in July.


For private-sector workers, the job vacancy rate held at 4.5% in August, unchanged from July and down from 4.7% a year earlier.
Quits edged down to 2.1%, matching a cycle low
The hiring rate slipped down to 3.5%, matching a cycle low
The layoff rate ticked down to 1.2%.
