MetaMask has added Bitcoin support, continuing the multi- chain expansion strategy of the largest EVM wallet currently available.
According to the announcement , users of this leading e-wallet can now buy Bitcoin directly with fiat currency, transfer BTC on the Bitcoin network, and swap BTC back and forth with EVM and SOL assets directly within the wallet.
This move comes alongside a series of new features the wallet has recently launched, including Polymarket integration, the launch of the mUSD stablecoin, and perpetual contract trading within the app thanks to Hyperliquid. MetaMask – a subsidiary of ConsenSys – revealed its multi- chain plans earlier this year, starting with Solana and expecting Bitcoin support in Q3. Recently, the team also introduced a physical MetaMask token running on the Linea network ( ConsenSys' Ethereum L2).
The new version now supports SegWit addresses and will soon add Taproot. Previously, ConsenSys also recruited personnel with experience in Bitcoin wallets, Lightning Network, Ordinals, BRC-20, and L2 Bitcoins such as Stacks or Rootstock.
MetaMask previously supported non-EVM networks through the Snaps plugin, including some Bitcoin L2. This all occurred as ConsenSys prepared for its IPO and MetaMask signaled the upcoming launch of its MASK Token . In October, the project also revealed a large-scale on-chain reward program, with over $30 million in LINEA rewards.
According to the announcement, users who swap to BTC on MetaMask will receive Rewards points.
