A Taiwanese woman surnamed Yeh was robbed recently while conducting over-the-counter (OTC) cryptocurrency trading. She chose to meet an online acquaintance in person to exchange cash, but the robbery occurred at Pingtung Railway Station. While trading with someone claiming to be a cryptocurrency dealer, the man suddenly stole NT$180,000 from her and fled. Fortunately, the police intervened quickly and arrested all three suspects within days of the incident.
Event Summary
Police stated that Ms. Yeh met someone online who claimed to be able to assist in buying and selling cryptocurrencies. The two then communicated via messaging app and arranged to meet in person at Pingtung Railway Station for a cash transaction. However, during the transaction, the other party suddenly robbed Ms. Yeh of NT$180,000 and fled the scene. Ms. Yeh was shocked and immediately called 110 to report the incident.
After receiving a report, the Kaohsiung Precinct of the Railway Police Bureau immediately formed a special task force with the Criminal Investigation Division and the Pingtung Precinct, and requested the Pingtung District Prosecutors Office to direct the investigation. Police reviewed surveillance footage from the area around the train station and traced related movements, quickly identifying the suspect. On the 29th, the task force, armed with arrest warrants and search warrants, apprehended a man surnamed Chiu and two other accomplices, one of whom was a minor, and seized relevant evidence.
Police stated that after questioning, the three suspects have been transferred to the Pingtung District Prosecutors Office in Taiwan for investigation on charges of robbery under Article 325 of the Criminal Code. The police also reminded the public that cryptocurrency-related fraud and violence have become increasingly common in recent years. If you have a need to trade virtual assets, you should try to use legitimate trading platforms and avoid carrying large amounts of cash to meet strangers in person to prevent potential danger.
