i would say it's possible today if you don't expect a one shot result. i reverse engineered a 2003 game and rebuilt it from scratch in another lanugage/engine/architecture, added headless replays and differential behavior testing against the original executable. it took a lot of handholding, but it worked extremely well in the end. and i did it with the previous generation of models (gpt-5.2 mostly)
