According to Odaily, Google is preparing to back a large data center project in Texas, operated by Nexus Data Centers and leased to Anthropic. The Financial Times, citing sources familiar with the matter, reports that the initial phase of the project could exceed $5 billion, with Google expected to provide construction loans, and a consortium of banks also aiming to secure financing by mid-year.
Anthropic has reportedly recently signed a lease for the 2,800-acre campus as part of its broader infrastructure partnership with Google. Construction has begun, with early debt financing provided by publicly traded closed-end investment firm Eagle Point. The site is expected to provide approximately 500 megawatts of capacity by the end of 2026, with the potential to expand to 7.7 gigawatts in the future.
In addition, U.S. District Judge Rita Lin in San Francisco issued a preliminary injunction on Thursday, temporarily blocking the Pentagon's order to designate Anthropic as a national security risk and halt the government's use of its AI tools. The ruling stemmed from a lawsuit filed by Anthropic, with the judge calling the government's actions "arbitrary" and warning against designating a U.S. company as a threat without clear legal grounds. Anthropic had previously reportedly refused to allow its models to be used in lethal autonomous weapons or mass surveillance, leading to strained relations with the government.
