ToggleAccording to a report by China's The Paper, the Nanjing Xianlin Half Marathon officially started on April 12, attracting 12,000 runners to participate, with an overall completion rate of 98.97%.
But what has sparked even more discussion is a housing subsidy policy launched simultaneously by Qixia District in Nanjing: those who complete the race will receive a housing subsidy of 100,000 yuan . This has generated heated discussions in Taiwanese communities: "There are so many houses in China that you can do this?"
You get paid just for registering, and the biggest prize is won if you finish the race.
According to official information from "Nanjing Qixia Release", the housing subsidy for this event is divided into three levels: registered participants can receive a subsidy of 20,000 yuan; successful participants can receive 60,000 yuan; and runners who complete the entire race can receive a housing discount of 100,000 yuan.
The subsidy is valid until May 31, 2026, and is applicable to 14 designated properties with areas ranging from 89 to 400 square meters. Each participant is limited to purchasing one property. The subsidy will be deducted directly from the purchase price and cannot be used to offset the down payment.
Common real estate promotional tactics include lowering down payment ratios, offering renovation packages, and issuing vouchers, but we've never seen a "run-to-own" housing subsidy before, which is certainly more newsworthy in terms of marketing creativity.

This isn't the first time Jiangsu has done this, but this time the amount is the highest.
In fact, the "marathon runner receives a housing subsidy" offer is not unique to Qixia District in Nanjing. According to Chinese media reports, at least six cities have introduced similar policies, including Wuxi and Yancheng in Jiangsu Province, as well as Xixian New Area in Shaanxi Province, Shiyan and Jingzhou in Hubei Province.
For example, in March of this year, the Wuxi Marathon attracted runners with a housing subsidy of up to 80,000 yuan, with a 50,000 yuan discount available simply for successful registration. Nanjing Qixia has now surpassed Wuxi with a 100,000 yuan subsidy, becoming the largest and highest-amount marathon housing subsidy program in the country.
Marathon Economy: One race drives 13 times the indirect consumption
In addition, according to data analysis, the economic impact of marathon events in China is also quite significant. Related research shows that the ratio of indirect consumption driven by out-of-town participants in areas such as food, accommodation, transportation, tourism, shopping, and entertainment is as high as 1:13.
According to the "2025 China Marathon Events Blue Book" released by the Chinese Athletics Association on April 4, a total of 594 marathons will be held nationwide in 2025, with a total of 4.54 million participants. 284 Class A events will directly generate economic benefits of 18.51 billion yuan, an increase of 16.8% year-on-year. The overall economic impact will reach 45.4 billion yuan, creating 183,000 jobs.
The innovative model is eye-catching, but its effectiveness remains to be seen.
Of course, the "marathon run with housing subsidies" strategy is essentially a short-term customer acquisition tactic during a market adjustment period, and its actual conversion rate remains to be seen. However, it is undeniable that this innovative attempt has opened up new avenues for thought.
