Atomic theory and digital objects based on Bitcoin
Atomic Protocol brings digital objects to life on Bitcoin and proof-of-work based blockchains
What is an atomic protocol?
Atomics Protocol is a simple and flexible protocol that can be used to realize the casting, transfer and update of digital objects (Digital Objects) on a blockchain based on the UTxO model like Bitcoin. An Atomic is a way to integrate the creation, transfer and update of digital objects - it is essentially a chain of digital ownership defined according to a few simple rules.
Why use Atomic?
Atomic specifications are the simplest way to organize digital assets on blockchains like Bitcoin. It's very simple to implement and provides maximum flexibility for static and dynamic digital assets, artwork, and objects. Its rules are very simple, no atoms can be accidentally used as mining fees. Additionally, it is simple to verify that ownership is transferred to the correct recipient, without relying on any third party or even running an indexer. Atomics are self-evident histories of digital objects. Having said that, most developers and service providers prefer running their own indexer, with all the benefits that come with it.
Example
·Digital collectibles, media and art
·Digital identity, authentication and token gating content
·Web website hosting and file storage
·Peer-to-peer swaps and atomic swaps
·Number namespace allocation
·Virtual land and property rights registration
·Dynamic objects and states of the game
·Social media profiles, posts and communication communities
·Military-grade security and verification requirements
The idea of using Atomics is to convey the history of Atomic digital objects from the time they were minted, to the time they were transferred and updated. Even if Atomical is updated or exchanged 10,000 times, it only amounts to 2.5 MB of data ( 250 bytes * 10,000 ). Digital objects are self-certifying, unforgeable authentication chains that do not rely on any third-party service or centralized indexer for verification.
The idea behind the atomic protocol is:
“No transaction history, not your digital object”
Any client, wallet, marketplace, game, and service can quickly verify Atomic by processing history according to very simple rules and detect fakes without relying on trusted services.
At the core of Atomics are a few key simple rules that need to be followed for minting, transferring, and updating operations. Before diving in, read on for an overview of the protocol to understand the high-level process.
What is an atomic digital object?
Atomic digital objects (or Atomic) are a new type of non-fungible token (NFT) that can be minted, transferred and updated on the Bitcoin blockchain. The main difference is that there is no need to use a centralized service or middleman as a trusted indexer. It works right now, without any changes to Bitcoin, without sidechains or any auxiliary layers. It is time to take back control of our digital lives - forever.
Atomics are self-certifying and easily verifiable, making them ideal for digital collectibles, social media, gaming, identity verification, and anywhere ownership and authenticity need to be established. The rules of the protocol are extremely simple, but at the same time provide military-grade security and verification, and do not tolerate any errors.
The Atomic Protocol is free, open source, and can be used by anyone, anywhere, forever. Our digital future depends on powerful digital object formats that elegantly handle every possible use case while minimizing the possibility of errors when implementing the software.
Atomic Protocol Vision
The grand vision is to establish and secure the Bitcoin blockchain as a source of truth and digital sovereignty. Atomics provides a simple yet powerful protocol to take back control of our digital lives forever. We have all the resources at our fingertips to create the future we want.
The Atomic Protocol is open source and can be used freely by anyone. All libraries, frameworks, and services are released under the MIT and GPLv3 licenses to ensure that no one has control over these tools and protocols.
This is work filled with our passion, all about giving the world the option to finally bring programmable digital objects to Bitcoin. It operates without any changes to Bitcoin, with no sidechains, no separate tokens, no second-layer networks, no middlemen, no leaders and no centralized group of parties.
It's all about working in harmony with existing protocols (such as Nostr, Ordinals, etc.). Each protocol offers different advantages, and Atomic Digital Objects adds an alternative available to users, creators, and developers.
Atomics is a shift towards sovereignty and self-ownership of our digital lives. A simple yet extremely powerful protocol for redistributing networks and social communities.
Main differences from other protocols
Comparing Atomics to other popular NFTs is the best way to understand the differences:
Atomics serial numbers, IDs, REFs
Atomics numbering is a 0-based numbering scheme that is used to give the global order in which Atomics are minted. The Atomics numbering scheme provides a simple way to reference an individual Atomic through a short number that complements the Atomics ID.
Atomics has an Atomics ID which is a unique identifier based on hashing and minting transaction outputs, e.g.
<txid>i<index> // 示例:<a14e65573ff32b95b91a0ed8367feec64125e5f4ff44d9901002b262da959e6d>i<0>
In contrast, the Atomics ordinal is the order of each minted Atomic given the order in which they appear in the blockchain.
Atomics Reference (REF) is another encoding of Atomics IDs, using Crockford-base32 to provide a richer character set allowing it to support more identifiers (see the Bitwork section).
