On December 18, 2023, a large amount of dormant Bitcoin was moved after being dormant for 8 years and 10 months.
Whales moved 2,101 Bitcoins, accumulated starting in 2015, worth $88.55 million at current BTC prices at Block height 821,802. The money move originated from the BTC address “1DJs7,” discovered by btcparser.com.
Back in 2015, when 1DJs7 first received 2,101 BTC from “1CJee,” it was then worth $510,543, with each bitcoin costing $243. 1CJee Wallet purchased these Bitcoins a year earlier, on August 7, 2014, from two separate addresses.
Fast forward to the present, this long-dormant P2PKH address has distributed Bitcoin to two new addresses. Approximately 1,762.99 BTC were sent to another P2PKH address (1GtUy) and 338 BTC were transferred to the Bech32 address (bc1qj), which uses the Segwit address format. A total of $88 million in Bitcoin at these addresses remains unsettled. Whales spent approximately 26.77 USD or 290 satoshis per virtual byte to send 88 million USD.
The whale showed little concern for privacy, as evidenced by the fact that Blockchair's privacy tool rated the transaction a mere 0 out of 100.
While not as old as the 2011 or 2010 coins, the 2,101 'sleeping BTC ' represent a significant reserve.
It remains uncertain whether the whales from 2015 and 2016 sold their shares or simply moved to enhance security or update addresses. Such movements of whales are often quite mysterious, causing the community to speculate. However, a notable trend is emerging: large numbers of “sleeping Bitcoins” have awakened, stirring curiosity and speculation in the cryptocurrency world.
