3/27/2024: Boeing CEO Resigns

Finally, a big leadership shakeup is happening at Boeing. Boeing’s CEO, Chairman of the Board and the Head of Commercial Airplanes are all stepping down. Boeing 737 MAX has been a disaster. It had two fatal crashes, numerous software issues and just recently a window fell off a Boeing 7373 Max mid-flight. Last August, I had a flight that was delayed for 8 hours due to an unknown electronic/potential engine problem. It was a Boeing 737 Max. It’s unbelievable Boeing is getting to the point that they couldn’t ensure the planes they sell are high quality and safe. An article titled Boeing Faces Tricky Balance Between Safety and Financial Performance as if it’s acceptable to trade safety for profits. Apparently, the focus of the Boeing executive team is to pump up stock prices and enrich themselves that they are willing to risk people’s lives.

I found this very insightful and scary reddit thread explaining why Boeing has lost its way. I am also not sure if things will materially change once the new management is in place. I don’t believe the new management will be more morally superior. FAAs and big airlines need to put in more guard rails so if Boeing’s safety doesn’t improve, it will be financially punitive for the company and for the company executives. It’s sad to see an American engineering icon like Boeing become a shell of its former self. This is yet another example of the corporate management class hollowing out a solid company to enrich themselves. It’s infuriating.
