El Salvador's Bitcoin wallet Chivo appears to have been hacked, leaking information related to source code and VPN access.
Attack on El Salvador's cryptocurrency program
As noted by BeInCrypto, a group of cybercriminals with the nickname CiberInteligenciaSV leaked source code and VPN access information believed to be El Salvador's Bitcoin wallet on an online forum specializing in cybersecurity. Specifically, CiberInteligenciaSV Chia for free, without selling to the community, the code inside the Chivo Bitcoin wallet ATM in El Salvador.
Thus, this seems to be the first cyber attack targeting El Salvador's Bitcoin wallet, the Chivo wallet of an entire country to steal Bitcoin. This leak comes after a series of events that have taken place including the personal data of 5.1 million Salvadorans being exposed to the public. Hackers released the stolen information to the public as a way to punish the country's Government.
As previously reported by BeInCrypto, El Salvador became the first country to accept Bitcoin as legal currency in 2021. The country later also launched the Chivo wallet. This is an official cryptocurrency wallet for citizens of El Salvador, allowing Salvadorans to buy, sell and store the world's leading cryptocurrency.
However, the Chivo wallet had a rough start. Users have reported many related errors and technical glitches. But it seems that despite reports of a personal data hack on Chivo appearing in early April, the Salvadoran Government has not yet addressed the issue. And this may be the main reason why the Chivo wallet was hacked and caused a data leak today.
Currently, the official damage related to this hack and data leak is unknown. We also have no information about what the hackers want to discuss with El Salvador officials.
