What is the national scale of the Digital Nomad Network?
Nine years ago, I predicted that there would be 1 billion digital nomads by 2035. Initially, many people thought this was impossible, but the pandemic has made remote work popular.
One-third of the world’s workforce works remotely or in a hybrid mode.
By 2024, there will be 1 billion people working remotely worldwide, of which about 10-20% will be digital nomads, totaling 100-200 million.
Digital nomads are not low-income backpackers:
The average annual income is $125,000.
90% have a college degree and 34% have a master’s degree.
They are high-quality talents that countries or network countries should attract.
Work distribution:
34% of male digital nomads work in software development.
16% of female digital nomads work in marketing.
Social and dating:
66% of digital nomads are single, so there is a need for more offline, fixed communities.
72% of female digital nomads tend to be progressive, while 53% of male digital nomads tend to be conservative, which shows a certain conflict of ideas.
Living Model of Digital Nomads:
Most nomads do not move frequently, but stay an average of 64 days. The main reason for migration is visa issues, not a love of travel - a problem that countries or networks can solve through visa policies.
I created a small cyber country in Portugal:
I moved most of my online friends to a coastal town in Portugal, where we all lived close to each other, within a 5-minute walk.
This is our own little experiment in a techno-optimist village, one that is permanent but retains the flexibility of a pop-up city.

While we easily understand maps of the physical world, it is more challenging to imagine maps of the digital world. This makes us tend to connect with people who are physically close to us, but the Internet allows us to build close relationships with people who are far away, and connections based on relationships and interests are more important than physical distance.
Physical states rely on weapons and armies for protection, while cyber states and digital assets rely on encryption technology to form impenetrable boundaries. Cryptography is the ultimate firewall.
The power of the cyber state comes from its media, money and flexibility. The traditional world has China, and the digital world has cryptocurrency.
