The X account (old Twitter) of the famous restaking project was hacked, spreading phishing links in an attempt to deceive users into accessing and stealing their assets.
The X account of EigenLayer was compromised, posting a fake airdrop link
On the afternoon of October 18, 2024, the investment community was surprised to see the X (old Twitter) account of the EigenLayer project announcing the launch of Season 2 airdrop, accompanied by a link to claim EIGEN tokens under the post.
However, many analysts discovered that this was a phishing link, as users who accessed the link and connected their wallet to start the token claiming process would have their entire crypto assets stolen by the malicious actors.
On-chain detective ZachXBT also confirmed that the X account of the famous restaking protocol had been compromised, urging users not to click on any links in the post to ensure the safety of their assets.
Notably, ZachXBT is usually one of the first to detect such attack and hacking incidents, and then issues warnings to the community. However, in this case, ZachXBT was unable to perform his usual duties, as he was "blocked" by EigenLayer, forcing the on-chain detective to post the warning on the Telegram platform.
It is highly likely that the attackers had anticipated that this detective would soon discover the incident, so they proactively blocked ZachXBT in order to extend the lifespan of the fake links on X, hoping to lure as many users as possible into the "trap".

This is not the first time the crypto community has witnessed similar attack incidents. Prominent victims include Uniswap founder Hayden Adams, Ava Labs COO, Algorand Foundation CEO, KuCoin exchange, zkSync project, and more, all of whom have had their X accounts compromised and used by hackers to spread phishing links.
Even the X accounts of large organizations like Frax Finance, Trezor, and even MicroStrategy have been attacked by hackers, causing significant damage to their followers. This has raised many concerns about the security vulnerabilities of the X platform in recent times.
At the time of writing, the fake access links have been removed.
It is unclear how many unlucky users have fallen victim to the EigenLayer phishing scheme today, and it is hoped that there will be no regrettable incidents like the one that occurred when Vitalik Buterin's X account was compromised, causing a loss of over $690,000 for his followers in September 2023.
The EIGEN token price has not been negatively affected by the above incident, still trading around $3.4/EIGEN.
