Upbit, a virtual asset exchange, announced on the 22nd that it had refunded approximately 8.5 billion won to approximately 380 victims of voice phishing.
Upbit operator Dunamu explained that it is using the real-time abnormal transaction detection system (FDS) to block abnormal transactions such as voice phishing and freeze the damages. In order to refund the frozen voice phishing damages, the company signed a business agreement (MOU) with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Mobile Criminal Investigation Unit’s Phishing Crime Investigation Division in September of last year and established a mutual cooperation system.
With the cooperation of the police, Doonamu is finding victims who were unaware of or did not report voice phishing damage and returning their assets. In February, it returned about 5 billion won to 246 people. On this day, it refunded an additional 3.5 billion won to 134 people.
A Dunamu official said, “Thanks to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s active investigation cooperation and Upbit’s thorough FDS monitoring, we were able to protect users’ valuable assets from voice phishing,” and “As the virtual asset investment fever is high, we will do our best to protect users’ assets.”
Meanwhile, Upbit is strengthening its monitoring capabilities through system advancement, such as introducing artificial intelligence to FDS. It operates a call center dedicated to financial accidents and cooperates with various investigative agencies, including the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, to strengthen the protection of users’ assets.
