Ethereum Name Service (ENS) will use Linea's technology to develop its own Layer 2 network called Namechain.
ENS, a service that simplifies the identification of addresses on blockchain, has chosen Linea due to its zkEVM Type 2 technology, according to information from the blog. This zkEVM technology will make ENS's Namechain compatible with existing smart contracts and tools of Ethereum.
ENS also stated that Linea is the first Layer 2 team to develop a version of ERC-3668 with minimal trust, supporting the resolution of hierarchical names across chains for subnames.
Linea is supported by ConsenSys, a company that researches and develops Ethereum.
This project is part of the "ENSv2" upgrade, the second version of ENS introduced earlier this year, moving the .eth domain operations to Layer 2 to increase flexibility and reduce costs. Domain registration and renewal will be managed on the Layer 2 Namechain, while name resolution will still be on Ethereum Layer 1.
ENS expects the Layer 2 deployment to increase transaction processing capacity, supporting a large number of domain registrations and renewals.
