On March 17, Ethereum developer Julian published an article introducing a new Fast Confirmation Rule (FCR). The core goal of this rule is to reduce the deposit confirmation time from Ethereum L1 to L2 and centralized exchanges from several minutes to approximately 13 seconds.
It needs to be clarified that the FCR mechanism is not intended to change the speed at which transactions are packaged on the Ethereum network or their "final confirmation time." Rather, it aims to send a signal in advance to services that rely on confirmation results (such as transfers from L1 to L2, transfers from L1 to trading platforms, cross-chain bridges , etc.) that "the transaction is likely to be safe," allowing them to make the judgment that "the transaction has been confirmed" earlier.
Before we delve into the FCR mechanism, let’s first understand what the term “final confirmation” actually means.
For a blockchain , the inclusion of a transaction in a block does not mean it is irreversible. If on-chain reorganization occurs, the block containing that transaction can be rolled back. Only when a block is fully confirmed through the consensus mechanism does it enter a theoretically immutable state, known as Finality . For example, when a user buys an item online, the likelihood of the order being cancelled decreases over time after receiving the item. Once the order enters the "confirmed receipt" state, it is almost impossible to change. For this order, it is equivalent to achieving a "final confirmation" state.
