Meta announced 'Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses' at the annual event 'Meta Connect 2023' on the 27th. The product will be sold for $299 (about 400,000 won) starting October 17th.
Users can use functions such as taking photos, listening to music, and making phone calls through the camera and audio mounted on the smart glasses, and can also conduct live streaming by connecting to Meta's SNS platforms, Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, Meta AI, developed in-house by Meta, can be used through voice commands.
Meta first launched smart glasses under the name “Ray-Ban Story” in 2021, but due to various technical problems and poor user experience, sales in April last year were only 120,000 units, less than half the expected value of 300,000 units. Additionally, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, only 10% of customers continued to use the product after purchase.
Last year's poor sales were likely a major blow to Meta's Reality Labs, which oversees the Meta smart glasses project. Reality Labs is also in charge of Meta's Metaverse and virtual space business, and although it downsized its business division in May, it recorded an operating loss of $3.7 billion in the second quarter of this year.
Despite the short-term losses, Zuckerberg is sticking to his long-term vision for smart glasses and virtual reality. Meta is developing smart glasses equipped with AR functions with the goal of launching them by 2024, and aims to complete the 3rd generation product by 2028.
