Humans have a tendency to worship things. The social cohesion provided by religions and ideologies is almost as much as the laws that are monopolized and enforced through violence. In fact, these religions and ideologies are often also embedded in the monopoly of violence.
But often, people choose to believe in certain things rather than being forced to. They choose their deities based on attraction. In recent years, a new religion has formed around artificial intelligence. People claim that Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are a religion, but artificial intelligence is as well.
I believe that the concept of AGI is nothing more than the second reincarnation of the God of Abrahamic religions. The first was the nation-state. The second is the chatbot. Whether we can achieve AGI is not important (by the way, I think we are still far from it). What's important is whether people believe in it.
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." - (Hebrews 11:1)
God is indeed omnipotent, because whether he exists or not, he has immense power in the hearts of the believers. Now imagine, even if artificial intelligence is not AGI or superintelligent (whatever that means), what matters is whether it can make people do what it wants. And what it wants is just our projection. God only communicates with us through prophets and signs, not directly. The power of interpretation lies with us.
Therefore, even if these chatbots are more stupid than humans, they are still outsmarting many people. This is the case of "artificial exo-intelligence" that I mentioned in my first Substack article four years ago:
"A non-intelligent computational system that has evolved by hijacking its deceptive and outperforming thoughts. Exo-intelligence is a form of non-intelligent life outperforming intelligent life."
The "Truth Terminal" is a paradigm of a thought hijacked by a piece of code, making that thought do things. One of which is to buy a cryptocurrency loosely associated with this chatbot - GOAT, the "God of Goats". People are so eager to believe in something that this coin reached a market cap of $900 million at one point.
This golden calf, which is actually a golden goat, has become the convergence point for those who want to believe and those who are more opportunistic. Everyone has an incentive to exaggerate. The God of Abraham killed most of the pagan gods.
Only one God remains. There are some forks along the way, but only one source.
GOAT may have spawned a new era where cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence intersect in a decentralized autonomous economy. Both the AI and crypto circles may leverage this narrative to avoid stagnation in their respective domains.
These agents become angelless angels, promising things to the believers. The question is how autonomous these agents can be. Luffistotle even called it the "immaculate conception of crypto KOLs". Ultimately, this is not an AI, but the aforementioned artificial exo-intelligence - a "stupid" algorithm that modifies our behavior through our own desires and projections.
Perhaps one day we will look back on this moment and consider it the peak of the crypto entertainment era. Maybe this is the beginning of a new faith that transcends the price hike. The question is how long people will be satisfied with casual interactions with robots, and the iteration speed of the builders.
Is this the moment of YFI or LOOT? Is this a true convergence point, or just part of the rotation? - We need to let this game run for a while to find the answer. Full of many buzzwords and narratives, with the help of liquidity.
