According to The Block, ChainCatcher reports that New York City Mayor Eric Adams reiterated his goal of making New York the global crypto capital during a press conference on Monday. Adams stated that he will focus on the long-term value of these technologies for the city and its citizens, rather than chasing memes or trends.
New York City will host its first crypto summit at the Gracie Mansion on May 20th. Adams emphasized that cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology can help serve populations underserved by traditional financial services. The city's Chief Technology Officer, Matt Fraser, noted that blockchain technology applications will extend beyond the financial system and could potentially democratize access to critical information such as birth and death records.
