According to a recent report, at least three cryptocurrency project founders have successfully thwarted efforts by North Korean hackers to steal sensitive data through fake Zoom calls. Nick Bax, a member of the white hat hacker group Security Alliance, issued a warning on X platform about this sophisticated fraud method. Typically, the scammers approach their targets by inviting them to participate in collaborative meetings. During the call, they send a fake notification about audio issues and request the installation of a patch to fix it. This tactic causes the victims to let their guard down and easily fall into the trap of installing malware.
Giulio Xiloyonnis, the co-founder of the blockchain game Mon Protocol, was also targeted but fortunately detected the anomaly at the last minute. David Zhang, the co-founder of the stablecoin Stably, and Melbin Thomas from Devdock AI, were also attacked with similar measures. Thomas had to reinstall his computer from scratch due to concerns about potential data breaches.
Additionally, the blockchain security company CertiK discovered that the Lazarus Group hackers used mixing services to transfer Cryptoassets. They detected 400 Ethereum, worth approximately $750,000, being sent to the Tornado Cash mixing service. These incidents highlight the dangers of cybersecurity attacks in the cryptocurrency field and warn the community to be even more cautious and vigilant.
